Let’s Talk TV.
First off, this is my very subjective, short list of shows I like. You most likely have seen all of these, but I will continue to update with new recommendations… and BEG / INVITE you to put your recs, replies, and evaluations in the comments, so we can all grow in this together.
I really love when I find a good show to binge. Some shows I’ve loved in the past, aren’t necessarily my current vibe, but still hold space for certain moods.
Inspo TV
There are seasons I need to feel inspired, when my creative energy is gone, or the world feels cold and monotone… and in those seasons I like to consume “beautiful” tv. Here’s a few of my go-to’s.
The Lost Kitchen: This is my current beautiful – tv jam. It’s set in Maine, and everything about Erin French is my dream life. When I watch this show it reminds me of my deepest desires since childhood, it brings me home to myself in a way that not many other things do, and ignites something in me to dream again.
Chef’s Table: If you’re creative and you appreciate what food culture brings to life, you get it.
Queer Eye: If I’ve ever felt like there was no kindness in the world, my daughter and I put on Queer Eye and cry. There’s something about seeing unkept humans finding a way to love themselves, or see themselves as worthy of being taken care of. And every single one of the Queer Eye’s are like precious puppies that you just want to snuggle in different ways.
Love on the Spectrum: Another show to watch when the world feels cold, that is so wholesome it makes me feel hope for the planet. There’s something so absolutely beautiful about watching the spectrum of humans live in their unique skin and articulate love differently. There is such purity that radiates from the people in the show, my sister in law said, “the world doesn’t deserve them.”
Ted Lasso: Not Reality TV, but wholesome, family storyline and well-written fun characters, and soccer.
Silly Escape TV
Schitt’s Creek: Took me a minute to get into this one, but the characters on this show are like a funny hug to me. It’s silly and light-hearted and I am dead over Moira, and would take David and Alexa as my BFF’s for life.
Grace & Frankie: A show that is so cute and makes me laugh, and look forward to being in my Silver Gal Era.
Fleabag: Quirky, Funny with accents and Scenes of England and a hot priest.
Sex Education: Gillian Anderson is the crush above crushes. It’s a cute, funny show with more Britishness and witty teen banter.
Portlandia: I think you either get it or you don’t. But this series brings me back to the early 2000’s when it FELT like hard decisions were if you were going to do a month of “no meat and no dairy.”
Good TV
These shows are just classically good, to me.
White Lotus: The cinematic quality and music bedding is an art form, synced with excellent character development.
The Morning Show: Such a good series.
The Bear: A must if you’ve ever worked in the food industry or been a human.
Breaking Bad: One of my favorites, can’t explain it.
Ozark: Such good writing and actors, and Jason Bateman. Personal connection, I played Marc Menchaca’s (Russ Langmore) girlfriend in a music video for Noah Gundersen. – Check me out at .42 seconds in. 😉 Jealous Love.
The Walking Dead: Hear me out, I get it, Zombies? I was a late bloomer to this show, and usually hate gore and shows like this… BUT at least the first 6 seasons the character development is so good, and I just love stories of the world ending and surviving together. Reminds me of the boxcar children and making forts in the woods as a kid. (Also kind of crazy bc it is about a pandemic that hits the world ending it… and when Covid hit, I was a little disappointed we’re not living on a compound together somewhere. )
Power TV
I have many secret dream lives, but one of them is to be an attorney wearing a pantsuit solving crimes and fighting the injustices of the world. In times I have felt not-powerful, I binged these shows and felt a little better.
Scandal: Kerry Washington, also the ultimate crush. Lawyers, women in suits, power dynamics, scandals, Washington DC & politics before Qanon.
How to Get Away with Murder: A follow up to Scandal, mystery, law school, Viola Davis.
The Good Wife: Fulfills all my female-lawyering fantasies also Mr. Big, and Logan and Richard from Gilmore Girls make appearances.
Big Little Lies
Little Fires Everywhere
Good Girls
Era Design TV
Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: My favorite show, set in my favorite fashion era. Jews in New York, witty characters and humorous writing… The design and characters are Wes Anderson-esq but with more fashion and femme flair? IDK. I just love this show. Who doesn’t love comedy, 50’s woman finding her way, fashion and brisket in early New York?
The Queen’s Gambit: Fashion, Color, Storyline
MadMen: Haven’t watched it in a while, but I remember loving the design era and January Jones.
Comfort TV
Gilmore Girls: This is duh. I am a single mom to a daughter, and this show has saved our lives. We started watching it early on in my daughter’s life, and we’ve watched it through over a ten times… 🤷🏻♀️ For me, it gave representation and fun to the often sullen, pitiful portrayal of “single mom,” and I am forever grateful. And obviously Stars Hollow is the goal of all our lives. Where we stand: Team older – Jess & Logan, no to Christopher (you had too many chances to be a dad), Luke is growing on me around the 10th time, but man sometimes he makes Laureli’s life of funness not fun. I’m kind of Team… Jason if I have to pick – to my daughter’s chagrin. But he has a good job and a clean apartment. Richard is the real star.
Downton Abbey: If Royal Dress, English accents, and proper tea make you happy, which they really do for me.
Emily in Paris: What is more comforting than vapid, unrealistic storylines of baguettes, fresh cut bangs, fashion week and a job instagramming in France.
Steamer TV
Some of these shows – I don’t want to recommend bc they have some sexiness that I don’t want to be judged for, but I also enjoyed these.
Normal People
Brigerton Season One
Sex in the City: Obviously a writer by the window observing NY fashion… but also some problematic moments but Carey on.
Dumpster TV
Not proud of it, but someone has to rage-scroll all the contestants afterwards and wish they had someone to talk to about it. I used to watch Teen Mom and Jersey Shore while nursing my baby daughter, terrible emotional combo. Dumpster TV is like Taco Bell, sometimes you just want it even though it doesn’t better your overall moral life.
Love Is Blind: Fun fact, my ex husband was the high school sweetheart of Vanessa Mannillo Lachey. This show irritates me in the best way.
The Ultimatum: Same / Same as Love is Blind
Sister Wives: The Saga that never ends until all the wives realize they don’t like Kody. I’m not recommending this show, it’s not good, I’m more confessing in case someone wants to talk about it.
The Bachelor: Haven’t watched in a few years, but man when I was a reluctant Pastor’s Wife I’d be watching Emily Maynard while the men went upstairs to pray on Monday nights.
That’s all I’m willing to admit to right now… one step at a time.
